SS. ILSE, Sea Palling – 13th September 2020
6 members of of Lowestoft Sub Aqua Club launched the RIB from Sea Palling to look for the wreck of the British cargo ship which was torpedoed and sunk in 1942.
We had allowed extra time in case we couldn’t find the wreck or we had trouble hooking in but we arrived at the wreck co-ordinates and grappled into the wreck first time. We had to sit around and wait for the slack tide, while we waited we saw several curious seals which were coming closer to us as time went on. With 2 pairs of divers and two staying on the RIB we were all able to dive at the same time with a spacing of about 5 minutes.

- Dive Details: The sea state got quite choppy as we were about to get in the water. As we descended the shot line, the light faded and we had to turn our torches on at about 12 metres. The grapple was hooked in well in an area of twisted metal frames and plates. It was very dark and the visibility was just over 2 metres. We attached my wreck reel to the grapple and we explored the jumbled wreckage. The wreck was seen as a hazard to navigation and in 1948 was dispersed and swept clear so it was difficult to recognise anything especially in the poor dark visibility. Unfortunately Jane lost her GoPro on the descent so there is no underwater footage. There were lots of bib everywhere we looked, reflecting the light of our torches. When we returned the shot line we reversed the grapple and took it clear of any potential snags and ascended the line to the RIB.
