24th April 2022 – Ullswater, Lake District
There’s always time to get a cheeky dive in, even when you’re on a camping trip to the Lake District. We were staying at Park Foot Holiday Park situated on the top right corner of Ullswater Lake, near the village of Pooley Bridge. It is the second largest lake in the Lake District and is about 7 miles long, 0.75 miles wide and over 60 metres deep.
There were better dive sites available around the lake but this entry point was chosen because it was at the camp site we were staying at. The car could be parked very close to the water, which made get the kit unloaded a lot easier.
There was a handy fence to hold onto as we walked in, the water was over a metre deep by the time we got to the end of the fence.
- Divers: Simon, Jane
- Max Depth: 8.1 metres
- Dive Time: 24 minutes
- Water temperature: 6 degrees C
- Viz: 4 metres
- Dive details: We walked in until the water was deep enough to put our fins on. While kitting up I dropped one of my fins and it sunk and disappeared which was not a good sign for any viz. I ducked underwater and spotted my fin already covered in silt. We swam out on the surface to one of the yachts that were moored a little way out. We descended the anchor chain and on reaching the bottom began to explore the surrounding area. It was a muddy/silty bottom with large patches of leaves. We didn’t see any fish only discarded fishing tackle. We spotted the rim and spout of a tea pot submerged in the silt, we also found 2 pairs of sunglasses and two stand up paddle board oars.
