The Anchor Wreck, Sea Palling – 21st August 2022
A Sunday lunchtime dive, Neap tides, sunshine, light wind and a small swell but only 3 members were available to dive. Unfortunately someone had to stay onboard and couldn’t dive alone so just two divers got to dive today. It was lifeboat day at Sea Palling so the beach was very busy.
A short trip to the wreck location, with Kathrin taking us there and finding the wreck on the sonar. The grapple was thrown over the side and we waited for the slack tide.
Dive 1
- Divers: Kathrin, Julie
- Max Depth: 19.7 metres
- Dive Time: 36 minutes
- Water temperature: 21 degrees C
- Viz: 2-3 metres
- Dive details: Julie and Kathrin entered the water off the side of the RIB backwards and made their way to the front of the RIB where the marker buoy was. They then descended via the shot line. The viz wasn’t too good, so torches were needed. There was a small current running, but not much. Kathrin used a wreck distance reel for the first time and led the dive. Julie followed the line and sometimes helped by securing the line at suitable points. We saw the hull of the wreck and the floor timbers went down like a staircase. There was also a large anchor, still fixed to its hefty rope. We slowly and lazily explored the site until our line ran out. We saw numerous small shoals of silver fish, (about 6 inches long) and a red rounded fish about 8 inches long. There was also lots of life attached to the wreck. We also saw a medium sized crab. We returned along the wreck reel line, unhooking it from where it had been tied along the way. We cleared the grapple from its hooked position ready for lifting. Then we ascended the shot line slowly. After a 3-minute safety stop, we slowly surfaced. Simon secured the kit on the rope line and we dekitted in the water. Simon then hauled the kit into the RIB and assisted us getting onto the RIB. After a short debrief, Kathrin drove the RIB back to Sea Palling.
It was a fun day out!
