Medes Islands – 28th Sept 2023
A fantastic club trip to the Medes Islands from 28th Sept to 2nd Oct 2023
The Medes Islands are a magic location just off the coast of L’Estartit on Spain’s Coast Brava. The islands are just offshore and lie in a protected marine park with diving depths gently shelving down to 50m, riddled with tunnels and underwater caves.
Almost all underwater environments of the Western Mediterranean are represented here, and this gives exceptional ecological value to the archipelago. Fish are in abundance including many large grouper, eagle rays and zebra sea bream abound. Also, pelagic predators including barracudas or the blue fin tuna and, occasionally, bottlenose dolphins, attracted by the abundance of food.
This was the first overseas club trip for about 4 years. It came at the close of the UK diving season and provided the opportunity to dive clear waters. 5 members of the LSAC club dived, and an additional 5 family members were also in the group.
We stayed in a local hotel about 150m from the port where the diving boat departs for the short 20 min ride out to the islands. We did 2 dives a day over the 3 days, visibility was excellent and there was an abundance of life considering we were diving the Med! Plenty of large groupers, barracuda, moray eels and zebra sea bream. The water temperature was 21C and diving through the cave to the famous underwater dolphin statue was a must!
