If you are new to the club, you may have opted to receive training.

The diver training is made up of 3 elements: Theory, Sheltered Water lessons (pool) and Open Water lessons.

Please remember to bring you Qualification Record Book (QRB) with you to all lessons so that your training can be signed off. The QRB needs to be filled in at the front with your details and have a passport photo included in the space provided.

The Sheltered water lessons take place at Waterlane Leisure Centre on our club nights (alternate Tuesdays).  You will be assigned an instructor for each of your lessons, and this may not be the same instructor every time.  If for any reason you are unable to attend a regular Tuesday pool session, please let an instructor or the Training Officer know.

The pool sessions usually run from 7.30pm – 9pm *.  You may arrive a little earlier to set up your kit, but must not enter the water before 7.30pm.  Occasionally we run Try Dives, and this may mean that an instructor is not available on a Tuesday night.  We endeavour to ensure that there is minimal disruption to your training, however, as a club we do need to promote ourselves, and tempt in new members.

The theory lectures are generally held at the RNSYC, and is likely to be a weekday evening or a Saturday morning. We like to ensure the date is best suited to both the instructors and the students, so please expect to hear from the Training Officer who will ask you what your availability is. Some lectures are now available online as e-learning. Theory lectures have also been conducted online via apps like Zoom and Teams.

Once you have completed your Sheltered Water lessons, and covered some of the theory, we can take you to do your Open Water lessons.  These are usually conducted at either Gildenburgh Water, in Peterborough, or Stoney Cove in Leicestershire. There is an entrance fee for both sites, and you can hire a Dry Suit or Semi-dry suit from both of these sites.  Other equipment can be loaned from LSAC (we ask for a returnable deposit of £20, and the kit needs to be signed out by a committee member or instructor – forms can be found in the kit cupboard), however we do recommend you purchase your own mask, snorkel and fins as soon as possible. When you’re ready to do your Open Water training, you will be asked by the Training Officer, what your availability is.  You may be able to car share for these trips, in which case we ask that you contribute towards the fuel costs.  

If you’ve some open water training coming up, try and think proactively about what kit you’ll need to take, how you’re going to get to the site, and what needs to be done to make it happen.  Often you’ll need the support of other club members or instructors, so thinking ahead will be of assistance to them too.  Don’t forget, whilst we’re all here because we love diving, we have other things going on in our lives as well, so can’t necessarily be available at the drop of a hat!  Our instructors respond very positively to proactive students, so if you’ve a day or two coming up when you’d be free to do some theory or open water training, just let the Training Officer know, and we’ll try to make it happen.

We don’t just offer diver grade training, there are other skills you may wish to learn such as Compressor Operator, Twin Set, Oxygen Administration and Underwater Photography.
