14th – 28th November 2021 – Caribbean Snorkelling
In search of good weather and clear seas, LSAC member Ken went snorkelling during a 2-week cruise of the Caribbean. The plan was to do some diving but Covid restrictions prevented this.
The cruise included the islands of Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Tortola (BVI), St Maarten, St Kitts, Antigua and Dominica and Ken snorkelled on the majority. The visibility varied between 10m – 40m. The air and sea temperature were both around 30C so no wetsuit was needed. The dives were about an hour in length, duck-diving to around 5m-6m depth.
The most noteworthy fish sighting was a 1m barracuda off Bonaire which initially stared at Ken then casually swam off. The best coral was on Aruba (photo) and the most varied marine life was on St Kitts with southern stingrays (photo), cuttlefish, trumpetfish, turtles, barracuda, peacock flounder plus various colourful reef fish.
There were interesting statues off Grenada (photo) in recognition of the slave trade centuries back. The slaves worked on the sugar plantations with the vestiges still used to make a potent rum. Interestingly rum punch was the local drink generally consumed after each snorkelling tour! It would seem rude to refuse……….
