30th December 2014 – Nemo 33, Brussels

  • by LSAC

Keeping up the tradition of an ‘end of the year dive’, 2 LSAC members travelled to Brussels in Belgium to dive in the deep swimming pool at Nemo 33. After last years trip to Stoney Cove where the water was 6 degrees, the 32 degree water of the swimming pool was a pleasant change. The journey down the A12 was going smoothly until we were 3.7 miles from the Brentwood roundabout at junction 28 of the M25, 45 minutes later we got onto the M25 and continued our journey. We arrived at the UK shuttle terminal with a few minutes to spare only to find that there was a 30 minute delay. After the short 35 minute journey on the train we drove another 2 hours to Brussels to the Thon hotel. The following day we jumped on a tram which took us to Nemo 33. We arrived at 12 for the 12:30 session and stood in the queue for the next 40 minutes. Luckily there was an extra session on which was not advertised, 13:30-14:30.

25th October 2014 – SS Yongala

  • October 25, 2014July 6, 2020

The Yongala is a 110m former steel passenger and freight steamer. It sank in 1911 during a tropical cyclone with its 124 passengers. The Shipwreck was found only in 1958 and is now a main tourist attraction in Australia. The sea floor surrounding the wreck is open and sandy, so the wreck has become an established artificial reef, providing a structurally complex habitat for a diverse range of marine life. In 1981 the wreck was sketched by marine biologist Leon Zann. Although the superstructure of the wreck remains intact and very much like this sketch, the significant buildup of sand around the starboard side of the vessel has been scoured away, and the ventilators and railings have collapsed.

27th May 2012 – Klein Bonaire

For the next 11 days our names were always on the blackboard for the 8:30 and 10:30 boat dives. There was another daily trip at 2:15 and occasional night boat dives but we only did our boat dives in the morning. The Buddy Dive Centre had several boats but we always dived from the Harbour Lady. Every day we had to be at quayside by 8:15 with our kit ready to be loaded onto the boat.

Diving under the ice in Norway Norway

24th February 2008 – Kirkenes

  • February 24, 2008July 5, 2020
  • by LSAC

During February of this year members of the Lowestoft Sub Aqua Club joined up with seven other divers from different parts of the country and from different training organisations to dive the frozen waters of arctic Norway. The group was based at Kirenes in Northern Norway well inside the Arctic Circle. Kirkenes is situated at the northern most tip of Norway in the Barents Sea, it is only a few kilometres from the Russian border and only 145 Km from Murmansk.

The purpose of the trip was to be trained in ice diving techniques and once the ice diving qualification was gained to then dive some of the sites in the fjords. The course was run by IANTD (International association of Nitrox and Technical divers). Once qualified we were to become part of a very small group to hold this qualification worldwide.
