20th June 2020 – Rosalie, Weybourne
After a looong break from UK shore diving, Paul, Hayden, Simon and Jane made plans to dive a local favorite, the Rosalie wreck, at Weybourne. With reports of 3m vis, calm seas and good fishing from the beach we kitted up and made the walk to the entry point. As we were diving the LW slack (~1 hour after Cromer), we spotted the boiler sticking out of the water from the top of the shingle beach and saw shoals of mackerel herding sprats into the shallows before making their attack.
- Divers: Paul, Hayden
- Max Depth: 8.3
- Dive Time: 75
- Water temperature: 15C
- Viz: 3m
- Dive Details: Hayden and I swam out towards the boiler with hopes of being in one of those shoals but didn’t manage to see any as we descended onto the wreck and spotted the first of many lobsters that inhabit the wreck. As we finned over to the main structure, and then around to the skeleton-like bow covered in plumose anemones, there were lots of ‘schoolie’ bass circling our bubbles. We continued on slowly, looking closely at (and Hayden taking photos of) the various animals growing on any surface they can find! There were lots of bryozoans, hydroids, sponges, anemones, peacock worms and the occasional bright nudibranch plus a few long spined sea scorpions and two species of wrasse (ballan and the iridescent corkwing). Once we got to what’s left of the rudder, with its resident pollack, we headed towards the massive spare propeller and propshaft, taking a few videos and photos along the way. After 75 mins and a full lap of the wreck, we ascended up Haydens DSMB and swam back to shore. As we swapped dive details, Simon filled a few tanks in preparation of the next dive and Paul set up his fishing rod to join the beach full of anglers catching mackerel! It was impressive to see the shoals of bait fish ball into a black mass as the mackerel chased them right out of the water and onto the beach. After watching the spectacle into the evening, catching a few along the way, the LSAC dive team headed off to wash kit, edit videos and let the rest of the club know the conditions are great for diving again!
- Divers: Simon, Jane
- Max Depth: 8.5
- Dive Time: 60
- Water temperature: 15C
- Viz: 2-3m
- Dive Details: We walked in shortly after Paul and Hayden and swam on the surface to the boiler and after a brief rest, descended onto the wreck. The tide was still running a little and the visibility was a bit milky. First dive on the Rosalie this year and the wreck looked a bit different but was teaming with life. After we came around the rudder we came off the wreck and ended up surrounded by sand. While we were away from the wreck Jane spotted a flatfish in the sand, which we were told was probably a dab. The viz wasn’t good enough to see the wreck in any direction but we eventually found the wreck again. There were at least 6 other divers on the wreck but we didn’t see any others. After exploring the wreck a bit more we headed towards the bow, ascended and walked back to the car park.
